Bill Tate writes. VPB-106 was reorganized on July 14, 1944, at NAS San Diego. Some of the aircraft had nose art applied there as well as in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. By February 13, 1945, it had finally reached the war zone and Tinian Island. Equipped with fifteen aircraft, the squadron became Tinian’s second PB4Y-2 Privateer unit. In April 1945, the squadron began sending detachments to Iwo Jima in order to patrol the Japanese home waters and to support the Okinawa invasion.
