Reference photos New Zealand Territorial Air Force (TAF) Mustangs in there first locally applied markings, circa 1945. Note the presense of bomb and rocket pylons and the location of the upper and lower wing markings.

Some sources speculate that when over-painting the USAAF stars, the bars were left untouched. This photo supports our view is that in most cases the slightly brighter RNZAF Blue was added to the bars as well. Peter Dingwall
