Spitfire LF.IX, MJ858

A collection of photos depicting Spitfire Mk IXs supplied to the Soviet Union as part of the Lend Lease programme.

A group of officers, probably immediately after a decoration ceremony, pose in front of a strikingly decorated LF.IX of a fighter unit. The time is probably spring or summer 1945. (via W. Matusiak)

Spitfire HF Mk IX TA810 during tests at the NII VVS (Soviet AF research establishment). Note the plain red star applied such that it is ‘straight’ at ground attitude. (via P. Butowski and W. Matusiak)

Spitfire LF Mk IX SM622 during tests at the NII VVS. Compare the star to that on the TA810. (via P. Arnold and W Matusiak)

This early Spitfire LF Mk IX, MJ858, was used for testing various modified canopies. In this photo, the canopy seems to be hinged upwards on the top forward edge of the windscreen, probably for bale-out. The actual purpose or technical details of this modification are obscure.Standard owym RAF scheme less quick recognition markings. Rudder and spinner in a bright colour, probably yellow, orange or red. (via W. Matusiak)
